Ethical Consumerism Driving Market Growth
Sales of fairtrade fruit & vegetable are surging across Europe. The
rise in
ethical consumerism is encouraging retailers to expand their fairtrade
product ranges, with some supermarkets selling exclusive fairtrade
lines.
The UK market is showing the highest growth, with most retailers unable
to find adequate supply of fairtrade fresh produce. Sainsbury's is the
frontrunner, selling 100 percent fairtrade bananas since July 2007. The
British supermarket is also financing fairtrade projects in developing
countries. However, fairtrade products have the highest market share of
fresh produce sales in Switzerland
where the Max Havelaar label is highly established.
Demand for fairtrade fruit & vegetables is expected to become
more evenly spread across Europe as more supply becomes available and
ethical consumerism rises. Growing awareness of fairtrade labels is
predicted to stimulate consumer demand.
This first-ever analysis of the fairtrade fruit & vegetables market gives
insights of the leading country markets in Western Europe.
