Rising
Production Levels Driving Organic Meat Sales
Sales of organic meat products continue to rise as French livestock
farmers raise production volumes. The market has suffered from
undersupplies since the mid 1990s with French organic meat producers
only now beginning to meet burgeoning demand.
Organic meat revenues increased by two-thirds between 1998 and 2001 and
slower growth rates are envisaged in the coming years as consumer demand
stabilises. A major driver has been French supermarkets & hypermarkets
stepping up marketing activities in response to elevated consumer
interest in organic foods. The organic beef and organic poultry segments
have experienced the highest growth due to food scandals like dioxins in
chicken feed and the BSE crisis.
The French market for organic meat products is the second largest in
Europe. The country is a leading organic poultry producer with
significant volumes exported to neighbouring countries. The supply-side
is highly fragmented however and consolidation is envisaged as companies
adjust to cater to the growing needs of the major retailers.
This
strategic report analyses the major product segments in the French
organic meat sector. Market sizes and revenue forecasts are given for
organic beef, organic poultry, organic pork, organic lamb, and organic
veal. Pricing, distribution and market information is provided along
with competitive information like market shares of the leading suppliers
and retailers.
Organic fresh fruit sales are projected to rise by 25.8 % in 2002 as
consumer demand for organic fresh produce remains buoyant in France.
Healthy growth rates are expected to continue in the short term as
organic fruit becomes more widely available to consumers.
