Organic Meat Sales Set to Surge
Sales of organic meat products in North America are projected to surge in 2004.

Unlike other sectors of the American organic food industry, the organic meat sector has been slow to develop. However high growth is projected from 2004 onwards due to the BSE scare elevating consumer demand for organic meats, which are perceived to be healthier than conventional meats.

The BSE scare caused the Canadian market for organic meat products to expand by 35% in 2003. The
US market is expected to show similar growth in 2004 as organic meat production steps up and as more volume goes into the retail trade. Organic poultry was the most widely available organic meat in 2003 with organic beef and pork rarely found in retailers.

The organic poultry segment dominates the North American organic meat products market. The relatively short production cycle, integrated production system, and low price premium are responsible for organic chicken to be the most popular organic meat with consumers. Organic beef in comparison is rarely found in retailers because of small-scale production, inadequate distribution infrastructure, and the success of competing products like natural beef. Significant volume has traditionally been marketed as non-certified organic beef due to these factors.

The organic meat market is expected to take off in 2004 as companies enter strategic tie-ups to raise production volume. More meat producers are envisaged to convert to organic farming methods and retail prices are likely to decrease as more volume is produced. Organic meat products are then likely to compete more fiercely against natural meats in the marketplace.

This report analyses the major product segments in the North American organic meat products market. Market sizes (volumes & revenues), growth forecasts (2004-2010), and market trends are provided for the organic beef, poultry and pork segments.

Retailer profiles, pricing analysis, and market drivers and restraints are provided along with competitive information like market shares of the leading suppliers.
