Natural Cosmetic MASTERCLASS: GREEN FORMULATIoNS

24 JANUARY 2013                                                                                       SAN FRANCISCO, USA

Masterclass Overview
In spite of a growing palette of green ingredients, formulators face many technical hurdles when developing natural and organic personal care products. This Natural Cosmetics Masterclass gave an update on standards and labeling regulations for such products in North America.

It was designed to educate companies on the major technical and formulation issues associated with natural and organic personal care products, providing practical guidance on how to overcome them. The Masterclass comprised a morning seminar program that gave an update on international standards, labeling regulations and market developments, followed by an interactive workshop that tackled the formulation issues.

Morning Seminars: Global Standards and Market Update
An update was given on the leading natural and organic personal care standards in North America (including NPA, NSF ANSI 305, USDA NOP, etc.), Europe (Cosmos, Natrue, Ecocert, Soil Association, etc.), and other geographic regions. Details were given of the ingredient and labeling issues of taking the certification route.

In light of numerous mislabeling cases involving natural & organic personal care products in the US, the legal framework for marketing and labeling such products was described. Details of the fragrance options for natural and organic personal care products were given. Developments in the North American and global market for natural & organic personal care products were highlighted, followed by details of the business openings as well as future growth projections. What is the future outlook of this emerging market?

Interactive Workshop: Overcoming Technical Hurdles
The workshop hones in on the major technical issues associated with formulating natural and organic personal care products. The workshop leader highlighted the raw material and formulation issues, including a review of the permitted / prohibited ingredients and processes. The range of alternatives to parabens, SLS / SLES, polymers, silicones and other synthetic ingredients were discussed, as well as their performance, stability, safety and cost issues.
