USA: Organic Beef
Market to Take Off
Dakota Beef has announced the acquisition
of an organic beef processing plant in
Howard, South Dakota. This is the first of three processing facilities
the company plans to set up in the Midwest.
The 20,000 square-foot plant in Howard is
to be certified by International Certification Services Inc. and it is
expected to start production of organic beef in spring 2004. At full
capacity, it will be processing more than 80 head of cattle each day,
making it the largest 100 percent organic beef processing plant in the
USA.
The facility will make Dakota Beef a fully
integrated organic beef processing company, allowing it to better serve
its retail and food service customers. The plant will be mainly be used
for Dakota Beef’s customers however it will also be available to other
organic beef companies.
Organic Monitor sees this as an important development in the American
organic beef industry. The industry is highly fragmented with most
companies producing organic beef on a small-scale for regional markets.
The industry is fraught with many challenges that arise due to
small-scale production.
Once production gets underway, Dakota Beef is poised to become a
dominant force in the North American organic meat products market. As
part of its ambitions to develop an international presence, it has
already entered negotiations with European firms to supply organic beef
to the European market.
